Ultracet binds with the opiate receptors in the Central
Nervous System (CNS), altering the body’s perception
and response to pain.
Potential Adverse Reactions
This medication can have unintended consequences
on the CNS that can cause headaches, dizziness,
nervousness, euphoria, fatigue, confusion, psychosis,
slurred speech, sedation and depression. It can
also affect the cardiovascular system causing hypotension
(low blood pressure), hypertension (high blood pressure)
and flushing. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are
other symptoms experienced by some patients. Especially
the first time they use the drug. If you experience
any of these symptoms, continue with your course
of Ultracet and speak with your doctor or health
care professional at the first available opportunity.
Also, in rare instances, allergic reactions to Ultracet
can result in breathing difficulties, blocking of
airways, swollen lips, tongue, face or throat and
seizures.
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking
Ultracet and contact your doctor or seek emergency
medical attention.
Use of tramadol can lead to physical and/or psychological
dependence so symptoms associated with drug withdrawal---nervousness,
sweating, tremors, difficulty sleeping--- can occur
if this medication is stopped abruptly after high
dosage long-term use.
Important Information
Ultracet should not be taken by those hypersensitive
to the drug and caution, or a lower dosage is advised
for elderly or debilitated patients. Also, there
is an increased risk of unintended complications
or personal injury if you:
• Take more than the prescribed dosage of
Ultracet. If think you have taken an overdose, contact
a doctor or go to an emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of an overdose of tramadol and acetaminophen
include nausea, vomiting, sweating, unusual drowsiness,
slowed breathing, seizures, abdominal pain, murky
urine, heavy sleep and unconsciousness.
• Are currently or have recently been heavily
addicted to alcohol or drugs and are still undergoing
withdrawal.
• Have a history of epilepsy and seizures.
• Have severe respiratory, liver or kidney
impairment.
• Thyroid irregularities.
• Take Ultracet with other medications that
contain acetaminophen (it will be cumulative) or
other drugs that can interact. It is important to
tell your doctor or pharmacist what other medications
you are using.
• Take sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers
or antihistamines, except under medical supervision,
while on a course of Ultracet. Inform your doctor
or pharmacist if you take any of these medications.
• Are pregnant. The FDA has categorized Ultracet
as a “C” rated medication for pregnant
women, warning the effects on unborn children is
unknown. It is not advisable to use Ultracet if
you are pregnant, or could become pregnant while
taking Ultracet.
• Are breast-feeding an infant. Ultracet passes
into breast milk and may affect the baby.
• Use alcohol excessively while taking Ultracet.
This will magnify the physiological effects of the
drug and may result in liver or breathing problems.
If you are taking Ultracet to alleviate post-operative
pain, make sure you cough regularly and breathe
deeply. This will help prevent any respiratory problems
that can occur in those that remain relatively motionless
for long periods. You should also exercise caution
when getting out of bed and walking as your co-ordination
and sense of balance might be impaired. You should
avoid or take extra care when driving a car, operating
machinery or performing other dangerous tasks.
Guarantee of Safety
All pharmaceuticals manufactured and sold in the
United States must undergo rigorous testing by the
Federal Drug Administration. This starts when a
company develops new formulations to treat an illness
or condition. The company has to show that these
proposed new drugs are safe for human consumption
and perform with minimal potential side effects
to human beings, in trials that cost many millions
of dollars and take a number of years to undertake.
After establishing this safety and efficacy for
the proposed pharmaceutical, the drug company must
satisfy the FDA that the manufacturing facilities
and quality control procedures are up to a very
high standard, without little or no chance of contamination
or variance in the drugs that will be sold, to the
samples submitted for test. The manufacturer is
usually granted a patent for the new drug and it
is sold as a brand name medicine during the life
of the patent. This is very simple description of
a very complex process that was created to ensure
the highest possible standards in this industry
that is essential to your health.
After the patent expires, other companies can to
apply to the FDA to manufacture and market, without
having to undertake the expensive testing and trials
that the patent holder did, a generic version of
the drug.
This generic version must be indistinguishable,
the exact bio-equivalent of the innovators or brand
name version of the drug, and be manufactured in
facilities that guarantee identical quality before
approval for sale is given by the FDA. Generic drugs
save consumers some 10 billion dollars per annum
at the retail level alone, with similar savings
at hospitals and in managed care facilities.
